A single piece of hardware can now feed both a passenger sedan and a fully loaded semi-truck, and that shift could reshape how charging sites get built over the next decade. Kempower has introduced the Mega Satellite Flex, a high-power dispenser capable of delivering up to 560 kW through the established CCS standard or up to 1.2 MW through the emerging Megawatt Charging System, known as MCS. The announcement came this week at the ACT Expo, during the company's Unplug & Recharge event for customers and partners.
The timing reflects a genuine fork in the road for electric transport. CCS has been the backbone of passenger EV charging for years, but it was never designed for the power demands of heavy-duty trucks that need to recharge quickly during mandated rest stops. MCS was developed specifically to close that gap, and its rollout is still in early stages worldwide. Site owners weighing this transition face plenty of practical questions, from equipment compatibility to regulatory matters such as whether VPNs are legal where you live if remote monitoring or payment systems rely on encrypted connections across borders - a reminder that charging infrastructure increasingly intersects with digital policy, not just electrical engineering.
One Site, Two Standards
The core idea behind the Mega Satellite Flex is consolidation. Rather than building separate stations for cars and trucks, operators can install one unit that switches between CCS and MCS depending on what pulls up. That flexibility matters because land, grid connections, and permitting are expensive and slow to secure. A dual-purpose charger reduces the risk of stranded investment if truck traffic in a given corridor grows more slowly than expected, or if passenger EV demand shifts faster than anticipated.
The unit supports up to 1,500 amps on the MCS side and 700 amps for CCS, with cable lengths of 5 meters for CCS and 2.7 meters for MCS. It's also built to work with 800-volt vehicle architectures, an increasingly common design choice among newer EV models that allows for faster charging without excessive heat or current losses. An integrated payment terminal is available as well, which simplifies deployment for public-facing sites that need to serve occasional drivers rather than fleet vehicles on contract.
Why Utilization Matters More Than Peak Power
Charging hardware is expensive, and idle equipment is the fastest way to erode returns. By serving both vehicle classes, a single Mega Satellite Flex installation can stay busy across a broader range of traffic patterns throughout the day, rather than sitting unused between truck arrivals or car visits. Kempower is framing this as a day-one utilization advantage, which matters to operators trying to justify capital costs in a market where charging margins remain thin.
The company also notes that the new charger integrates with its existing distributed power architecture, meaning operators already running Kempower systems won't need to replace or redesign their setups to add MCS capability. That kind of backward compatibility lowers the barrier to adoption considerably, since infrastructure upgrades are often slowed by the cost and complexity of ripping out working equipment.
What Comes Next
The Mega Satellite Flex is slated for sale in North America and Europe starting in July 2026, giving the industry roughly a year to prepare sites and finalize orders. Its arrival lands squarely in a period when MCS standards, grid capacity, and truck manufacturing timelines are all still catching up to each other. Whether dual-standard chargers become the norm or a transitional stopgap will depend largely on how quickly heavy-duty electric trucks reach meaningful volume on the road.
